This documentary is a visual summary of the material presented in Evolution: The Grand Experiment curriculum. It is appropriate for family viewing, although younger children may not understand all of the concepts presented. Running time: approximately one hour.
In childrenís books, science textbooks, kidís television shows, and movies, evolution is presented as fact Ė even though it is only a theory. Attempts to teach other theories of creation are blocked. A thorough study of the current evidence both for and against the theory of evolution is timely. As one of the most controversial topics of our day, it is appropriate for learning institutions and home educators to address this issue; it is vital that students be given the opportunity to see both sides of the evidence.
The material presented in this book comes from interviews with over 60 expert scientists from some of the most highly acclaimed scientific institutions, universities, and museums of the world. Yet it has been written in laymenís terms so that it can be used in an educational setting. The parent/teacher does not have to be familiar with the theory of evolution to use this material.
Included in the topics under review are: two opposing views of the origin of life, spontaneous generation, mechanisms for evolution, acquired characteristics, natural selection, chance mutations, what evidence exists for evolution, the fossil record, formation of DNA, and formation of proteins and amino acids.
The Teacherís Manual is designed for students from grades 6-12, although it is probably better suited for high school students. The Manual contains all of the tools needed to assist in lesson preparation including: the purpose of the chapter, discussion questions, learning objectives, section tests, chapter exams, a comprehensive final exam and answer keys. The tests are perforated for easy removal.
This course could be considered one-half credit (Carnegie system) in life science or biology, perhaps using the course title of Creation Science.
