This handy series is designed to introduce students to upper level critical thinking skills and provide quick, easy practice across the subjects. Critical thinking skills include the ability to analyze, interpret, and recognize the underlying issues presented in materials – whether in discussions, textbooks, newscasts, political ads, or debates. These upper level skills assume that students have mastered basic comprehension and can move beyond the simple recall of facts.
The Warm-Up books measure 8x5 inches and are designed to be brief, supplemental exercises, without requiring a lot of “busy work.” The short work-outs are categorized by subject area: language arts, social studies, math, science, and life skills. There are enough lessons for one exercise per day across a typical 9-month academic year. Developing these basic critical thinking skills is essential for students going on to college. Many writing and essay assignments require some sort of critical analysis.
Most exercises require students to make a short list (five to ten items) that fit a particular situation or make-believe scenario. Others are fill-in the blanks, sorting, crosswords, or logic questions – just to name a few.
This level is for grades 5-8. Answers are included in the back of the books.
