This study guide is designed to help students comprehend and analyze the novel by the same name. The answers for the questions are included.
A brilliant scientist, Victor Frankenstein, is bent on creating life. Expecting fame and glory from his discoveries, instead he unleashes tragedy and faces dire consequences. The imaginative story leads readers into an examination of the responsibilities of science and the ethics involved in both science and medicine today.
The story opens with Robert Walton, the captain of a ship exploring the North Pole, writing about his exploits to his sister back in England. Trapped by the ice, he comes across the seriously ill Dr. Frankenstein and nurses him back to health. The story shifts to the doctor’s retelling of his life and how he came to be found in the desolate ice country. The chilling story not only includes the creation of the monster, but the tragedies that unfold to those close to Frankenstein as a result, including the death of his brother, the death of an innocent girl adopted by his family, the death of his dear friend, the death of his grieving father, and the death of his new bride.
The story reverts back to Walton, who then tells about the doctor’s death, his own encounter with the lonely and hated monster, and the monster’s departure into the frozen wasteland to die.
The novel by Mary Shelly is sold separately. The study guide and the novel are appropriate for a credited course in English or World literature.
