This textbook contains answers to the exercises in Harvey’s English Grammar.
The two English Grammar volumes written by the 19th century educator Thomas W. Harvey, provided the framework for classic education in this country, along with McGuffey's Readers. In addition to bringing these classics back into print, and revising them only slightly for modern audiences, Mott Media has added keys which contain the answers to the exercises in both volumes. These compact volumes cannot be matched for the thoroughness with which they treat every aspect of English grammar.
This textbook can be used in grades 7 and 8, as well as high school. It is a comprehensive text in the classic sense, including four parts: (1) Orthography—Study of letters, syllables, sounds and spelling that make up English words; (2) Etymology— Study of words classified into parts of speech - each part of speech is further studied according to classes, number, tense, mode, and other attributes which affect it as variously used in sentences; (3) Syntax—Study of sentences, their elements, relations of parts and so forth and includes study of punctuation; and (4) Prosody—Study of accent, quality, and tone of language, plus rhythms and measures as used in poetry. A more complete treatment of this topic cannot be found in virtually any modern grammar books. Students who have used this book as their grammar text can continue to use it for reference, checking on rules and definitions for a lifetime of use.
