This study guide is designed to help students comprehend and analyze the novel by the same name. It is divided into three parts: basic comprehension questions, discussion questions that invlove more critical thinking, and extended activities and research suggestions. The answers for the questions are included.
A story-within-a-story, the novel opens on a boat docked in the Thames Estuary near London, with an Englishman recounting his escapades as a steamer captain in Africa to a group of fellow seamen. The tale stretches from dusk to late into the night, symbolic of the passage of time and journey into darkness when he captained a ferry boat for a Belgian trading company. Assigned with transporting ivory down the Congo River, he and his crew of cannibals pursue a mysterious trader.
The novel features a tug-of-war between the duality of man: between the idealistic, Utopian mindset and the brutal, power-hungry reality; between the noble primitive and the corrupt civilizer; and between the illusion of enlightenment and the truth of fallen human nature.
The novel by Joseph Conrad is sold separately. The study guide and the novel are appropriate for a credited course in English or World literature.
