A young orphan is raised by her wealthy, yet cruel aunt. She is then sent away to school where the headmaster is equally cruel and brutal, preaching a lifestyle of poverty and privation contrary to his own family’s situation. She endures through the help of her friend and ends up teaching at the school for two years under a different headmaster. Thinking working as a governess may be better, she takes a position at Thornfield Manor where mysterious events keep occurring. Falling in love with the owner despite class differences, they decide to marry. But at the wedding, it is learned that he is still married to a woman he met in Jamaica – who is revealed to be living at the mansion since she has gone insane. Thinking that love is lost, she leaves, finding herself penniless and begging. She is rescued and agrees to go to India as a missionary, but cannot let go of her first love. When she believes she hears him calling to her, she returns to India to find the mansion burned down and her love blinded through his attempts to rescue the servants. They marry and find true happiness.
