This interactive series is designed to prepare students to make the shift from arithmetic to upper level mathematics. Arithmetic skills—using the operations of addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division on different kinds of numbers—are reviewed with whole numbers, decimals, and fractions, and then applied to percents, integers, and simple equations and inequalities.
Other skill areas covered include measurement, ratios, rates, proportions, geometric terms and constructions, exponents, factors, patterns, graphs, functions, interest, graphing on the coordinate plane, data analysis, and probability. Each course level goes into greater detail in each topic.
Course 1 focuses on a combination of rational numbers, patterns, geometry, and integers in preparation for one-step and two-step equations and inequalities.
In addition to the standard math topics, the courses include practice in problem-solving skills, math vocabulary development, mental math, hands-on activities, and test-taking strategies. In the back of the Student Text is a Skills Handbook section that helps students who need more work with preliminary skills prior to doing the lesson. The lessons also contain self-check questions after certain explanations; the answers to these are in the back of the text so that students can get immediate feedback before continuing with the lesson. A third section in the back of the text offers word problems and extra skills for even further practice.
Please note that the text includes online interactives that require passcodes. The publisher has yet to figure out a way to make those workable for homeschoolers. Since this information is supplemental to the course, the course is still useful without this access.
The separate Student Workbook is divided into two sections. The first section includes “templates” for taking notes when doing the lesson. These include fill-in-the-blank questions, vocabulary, and quick check questions. By completing these sheets before doing the exercises in the lesson, students can be sure they are ready to proceed. The note-taking sheets can also be used for review before taking tests. The second portion of the workbook contains graphic organizers and other activity sheets that can be used to cement learning or for review. Not all students will need this extra help; the pages can be assigned as needed.
All Teacher-related materials, including the Teacher’s Edition, answers, lesson planning options, and other resources are included in the “Teaching Center” that contains four CDs. The Set includes the hardcover Student Text, All-in-One Student Workbook, and the Teacher Center CDs. The answers are found on Disc 2 and have a file extension of ANS. The disc also include files of the student pages with answers imprinted on them; these have file extensions of TE.
