Ray’s for Today offers the rigorous and uncompromising content of the original Ray’s New Arithmetic series in an updated format. It recreates the classical teaching in an age-appropriate and contemporary manner while still keeping the emphasis on oral language, mental math, and math reasoning.
The lessons are designed along the stages of learning: exposure, practice, and mastery. The goal is to build a deep, yet practical understanding of math. Eight levels are planned for grades 1 through 8.
Each level includes a Student Text and the Instructor’s Manual (sold separately or as a set) Please note: the Instructor's Manual is necessary to teach the course.
Each book comes shrink-wrapped and three-hole punched. Customers have the option of using their own binder or they can purchase a binder from us (sold separately, order HBC# 130632, the 2-inch binder for the Student Book and Level 5 Instructor's Manual. The product cover can be slipped into the cover of the binder. This keeps costs down to make this one of the most affordable, full-fledged curriculums on the market. It also gives the parent/teacher several options for pulling out individual sheets for the daily lesson or giving the student his/her own notebook.
The Student Book contains the teaching presentation in conversational form. In the elementary levels, the lessons are written for the student to read on his own if he is able. Otherwise, the parent/teacher can read the lesson along with the child and guide the child’s use of the manipulatives and visuals.
The essential learning objectives for Level 5 are: (1) be proficient at recognizing and working with numbers through the billions; (2) be proficient at multiplying and dividing by a multi-digit number; (3)
be proficient at all four operations with fractions and mixed numbers; (4) be proficient with decimal concepts; (5) practice factoring and related concepts; and (6) be introduced to percents and ratios.
The program uses the principle approach, teaching math in an orderly and systematic fashion, based on the order and consistency observed in creation. The conversational approach of the lessons integrates language and thinking skills as the concepts are built step-by-step and concept-by-concept. New concepts, especially in the primary grades, are taught using hands-on manipulatives and visuals to guide how the student “pictures” the skills.
The larger format (81/2 x 11 pages) is easier to use than the original series. The lessons are flexible enough to accommodate different learning styles and can be adjusted to fit your child’s pace. Additional exercises are included in the Instructor’s Manual for those students who need more practice or challenge, and can be assigned as homework.
The program still includes the story problems from the original series. The difference is that these are incorporated into the learning as real-life examples that help cement the concepts. Extensive models and “walk-throughs” are given to guide students in the thinking process, along with step-by-step practice, making the story problems easier to understand.
Besides the format, the main difference from the original series is that the material is presented in age-appropriate levels that correspond with typical grade levels. Almost all of the problems in the original series are included in this series. The only exceptions are obsolete tables and problems that no longer apply today. There are 170 to 180 lessons per level to accommodate a 9-month academic period, although families are encouraged to continue the reviews and cement mixers over the summer.
