The answers for the questions are included.

It recounts a single day in the life of an ordinary prisoner during the Stalinist repression, exposing the realities of life in the Gulag – the forced labor camp system for political prisoners. The mundane existence is punctuated with injustices, an undercurrent of uncertainty, and the maneuverings of men desperate to survive. Through the lives of the various prisoners and guards, the reader sees how each personality responds to the circumstances based on their values, beliefs, and upbringing. In the process, the author sheds light on the meaning of life.

Despite the degradation, Ivan somehow manages to survive. By accepting his new identity and life, he finds ways to make his life meaningful, throwing himself into his mundane tasks with great intensity. The effect is that he overcomes and becomes a special type of hero who rises above the circumstances.
