Through the lives of the various prisoners and guards, the reader sees how each personality responds to the circumstances based on their values, beliefs, and upbringing. In the process, the author sheds light on the meaning of life.
Despite the degradation, Ivan somehow manages to survive. By accepting his new identity and life, he finds ways to make his life meaningful, throwing himself into his mundane tasks with great intensity.
