A young recruit joins the US Army during the Civil War in search of glory, adventure, and excitement. His first taste, however, is the monotony of waiting for orders and then the monotony of traveling long distances by foot. The march gives him plenty of time to question his readiness and courage, particularly as he considers his mother’s warning that war carries heavy responsibilities of duty at all costs. When his regiment finally engages the enemy, he fights on, mainly because he has no place to run. During the next skirmish, he panics and runs, setting off a series of encounters with dead and wounded soldiers that challenges his conscience and his actions. When he eventually returns to his regiment, he fights bravely and is heralded as a courageous warrior. The conflict within him tempers his youthful idealism and thoughts of war, and brings him to a new level of maturity that understands true bravery.
