A 12-year-old boy adopts an orphaned fawn and makes it a part of his family and his best friend. But life in the Florida backwoods is harsh, with his family fighting off wolves, bears, alligators, and failure in their subsistence farming. When the adult deer threatens this meager existence by eating the crops, the boy must make a heart-wrenching decision between saving his pet and saving his family. As the story unfolds, the reader not only glimpses rural life, but the complicated interactions between a father and his son. Though sad, the story celebrates the continuity of life, the power of family, and the realities of adulthood.
