A brother and sister become more than just casual observers when their lawyer father decides to defend a black man he believes is wrongfully accused of rape by one of the poorest and most ignorant men in town. Spurred by their connections with their black cook, they experience the other side of life for those less fortunate, including a mysterious recluse who lives in the neighborhood. In the process, they learn the meaning of human dignity, the corrupting power of prejudice and mob rule, and the realities of racism. This moving, yet realistic portrayal of life in the deep South exposed the issues that led to the Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s.
